Behind the Scenes at the Ulm Puzzle Workshop — How a Business Trip Improves Our Products

Behind the scenes — what a business trip has to do with our puzzles

Many of our customers see the final product: a puzzle in a premium box, precisely die-cut, richly printed, Made in Germany. What they don’t see is what happened before. The conversations, the decisions, the trips — and yes, sometimes even the cruise ships.

This blog post is an honest look behind the scenes. Because good puzzles don’t come from a desk.

The beginning: Why we travel at all

Ulmer Puzzleschmiede is a small company. We don’t have a purchasing department, a product development team, or a large crew traveling the world for us. When we make decisions — about frames, materials, new designs — we do it ourselves. Personally. On site.

That takes time. But it’s worth it. Because there’s a huge difference between a supplier conversation by email and a visit to the workshop. You see how the work is done. You feel if the quality is right. You build a relationship based on mutual trust — not just a contract.

The frame manufacturer — where craftsmanship meets precision

One of our most important stops was visiting our frame manufacturer in Italy. A small family business that has been making frames from FSC-certified pine wood for generations. No mass production, no anonymous factory hall — genuine craftsmanship.

Why Italy? Because quality has an origin. Our puzzles are made in Germany with the highest standards for materials and workmanship. Our frames follow the same principle — just in a small workshop in northern Italy, where mitered corners are still checked by eye and no frame leaves the workshop unless it fits perfectly.

The FSC-certified pine wood used here comes from sustainably managed forests. Each frame is made in several steps: cutting, sanding, gluing, surface treatment. Much of this is done by hand — not because there are no machines, but because craftsmanship is simply better at the crucial points.

The idea: Puzzle On Tour — because board games have been doing it for a long time

Anyone familiar with the gaming world already knows the concept: board game cruises. Entire ship journeys organized around games, communities, and shared experiences. Playing for days, meeting new people, living your favorite topic — on the sea.

We asked ourselves: Why not with puzzles?

The puzzle community is growing. Speed puzzle championships take place all over the world. The respective national championships in individual countries, the world championship in Valladolid, the European championship in Istanbul. Puzzle events are popping up all over Europe. Puzzle fans are passionate, connected, and looking for experiences around their hobby.

So we just gave it a try. No big event, no official occasion — just a very personal first exploration. A business trip that was also meant to ask: What does it feel like to bring puzzles on the road? To place puzzles in the locations shown in the designs? To take a community along via social media — daily, live, on the go?

The response surprised us. The reaction to our daily posts — puzzle on site, design meets real location, humor when things don’t go as planned — was bigger than expected. Marseille without lavender. Cagliari instead of Manarola. The darkest spot in the Mediterranean with the darkest puzzle. The community was there. Every day. 😄

Will this one day become a real puzzle cruise? We’re keeping the idea in mind. The first test was definitely a success. 🚢🧩

New impressions — new designs

Part of this journey took us across the Mediterranean — aboard the Costa Toscana. What initially sounds like an unusual place for business decisions turned out to be surprisingly productive.

New designs do not arise from algorithms or market analyses alone. They come from impressions. From the light over Lake Alboran at night. From the colorful facades of an Italian harbor. From the scent of lavender in Provence — or in our case, the scent of missing lavender because it hasn’t bloomed yet in April. 😄

Each destination on this trip had its own theme — because those who sell puzzles live puzzles. Barcelona called for Paella y Tapas. Naples for cucina Italiana. Rome for the view over the Eternal City. This isn’t marketing — it’s genuine passion for what we do.

What the trip specifically brought

Business trips are hard to quantify. What we brought back:

The personal confirmation that our frame manufacturer in Italy works exactly as we imagine — with care, precision, and genuine craftsmanship pride. The assurance that our premium puzzle frames will continue to be made where quality still has a name. New inspirations for designs that will appear in upcoming collections. And the first test of an idea that might grow bigger than we think today — puzzles on the road, with a community that travels along.

What this means for you

Every time you complete a puzzle from Ulmer Puzzleschmiede, there’s more behind it than you see. A frame manufacturer in northern Italy who loves their work. A production facility in Germany that values quality over efficiency. And a team that travels, observes, asks — and brings the best answers home.

The trip is always worth it. Always. 🧩

Anyone who wants to learn more about our frames — or who is currently looking for the perfect gift: Our premium puzzle frames for 1000 and 2000 pieces are available directly in the shop. Perfectly matched to our puzzles, in three colors: Black, White, and Oak – Eiche.
